Glitter & Leather Bunting Necklace

On Monday I mentioned that I was auditioning for Season 15 of the So You Think You're Crafty competition and simply having the opportunity to do so kind of made my day/week/month/life. Just in case you missed the good news on Facebook, I made it through the auditions and will be a Season 15 Crafter!! To any of you who went and voted, I really truly appreciate it!

For my audition craft, I sort of procrastinated.. wait, I lie. I DEFINITELY procrastinated. The day the submissions were due, I had yet to create anything so I had to limit myself. It had to be something small and it would have to use things I already had on hand. I decided that adding a pretty little necklace to my collection was the best route to go.. That's where this glittered leather pennant necklace comes in!

Tshirt Yarn Bib Necklace

On a completely unrelated note, Weight Watchers is going very well! Even with falling off of the horse once or twice (or 3 or 4 times), I have lost a little over 10lbs in the past month and a half. Woot woot!

Now that I got to brag a little bit, let's get to the real subject matter: a bib necklace made out of an old tshirt.

Morse Code Necklace Tutorial

Yay, I got another project off of the to-do list! Enter in the Morse Code necklace {and tutorial!}. I've been meaning to find a necklace to symbolize the unity between the Mr. and I, but the whole two hearts intertwined thing just isn't my style. I thought about maybe an M for our last name but even that seemed a bit too obvious. After much thinking, I decided upon doing a simple Morse Code necklace.

This really was simple... almost as simple as my bar pendant necklace except this took a tad more planning with the pattern. As with most of my favorite projects, this is completely customizable -- any colors you like in any word/phrase that you want. Want to see how I made this little beauty? Read on!

Bejeweled Bar Pendant Necklace

I had mentioned here and here that I'm expanding my crafting horizons and venturing into jewelry making. For my birthday, I received all of the tools I'd need to start working with wire pieces (thanks, honey!) and a gift card to a specialty bead store from my amazing coworkers. Since I have no experience with this stuff, I decided to take it easy and create something simple. In less than thirty minutes I had this great bar pendant necklace and I couldn't be more excited to wear the heck out of it.

Dream Catcher Necklace

Have I ever mentioned how artistically talented my husband is? In many ways, he puts me to shame but it's one of the qualities I love most about him. On our way home from our nephew's birthday bash, we had to stop at the craft store for some watercolor supplies for him. As we were checking out, I noticed that our cashier had on a super cute dream catcher necklace and I instantly wanted one. Now, normally I'm not so impulsive but dream catchers are kind of nostalgic for me. When us kids were growing up, we always had a dream catcher in our window and being that my father's grandfather was Cherokee, I was taught to treasure the dream catcher for what it symbolized.

Rather than search one out and wait for shipping, I figured I could try my hand at jewelry making and weave one together myself.

MATERIALS:
  • Brown cloth-wrapped wire (in the floral department)
  • 18" of embroidery floss, color of your choice
  • 16" length of chain
  • 1 jump ring
  • 16" twine
DIRECTIONS:

  1. Gather your materials in a well lit area. I had a small jewelry kit that I had never used so I was able to pick and choose what hardware I needed from in there.
  2. Form a circle with your floral wire. My wire was pretty bendable so I created a double loop and then twisted the ends into a rosette shape. If you want a clean circle then you can leave the ends down and wrap the entire loop in a dark colored fabric strip or ribbon.
  3. Tie the floss in a knot behind the rosette and then loop it around the circle as shown. I did this every inch or so.
  4. Now instead of using the wire to create your knots, weave the floss in and out of the existing pieces. I chose not to add any beads because I wanted mine to be very simplistic, but if you wanted to, this would be the point where you would string the beads onto the floss to incorporate with the pattern
  5. Continue this weaving pattern
  6. Once at the center, tie the floss in a knot and cut off the remaining thread as close to the knot as possible
  7. Using a jump ring attach the dream catcher to the center point on your chain
  8. String the twine through the two end links on the chain and tie the two fraying edges together. Leaving plenty of room to slip the necklace over your head.
you can see the jump ring at the top connecting the charm to the chain
