DIY Fish Toy for Cats

I think I neglect to mention Aubrey a lot. She's kind of the best cat ever and so low-key. She was our first "baby" and I will always love her more than words can ever express. She hates really dislikes Quinn which breaks my heart but she keeps herself content. I feel like every once in awhile, she needs some super spoiling which is why I decided to make her a new toy.
MATERIALS:
heavy weight wool scraps in a dark color
white felt
embroidery thread & needle
sewing machine & sewing tools
small bell
catnip (optional)
fish pattern (below)

INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Print out the pattern. First use it to trace out two fish body shapes on the dark material with a 1/4 inch seam allowance. Then, cut out the skeleton an trace it on the light colored felt

2. Pin the skeleton piece to the center of the fish body. Using an embroidery thread and needle, stitch around the entire piece to ensure that it is secured.

3. Once it is finished, it'll look like this:

4. Place right sides together and sew around the perimeter. Leave a 2-3in gap.

5. Because the fabric is so thick, cut little notches along the seam to better allow you to flip it right side out.

6. Using a chop stick or whatever you have on hand, flip it right side out and smooth out the seams.

7. Slip some catnip and a bell inside and use a slip stitch to close up the opening.

You'll end up with a jingly little toy that your cat is sure to love!

Aubergine looks like a predator in these pictures because I had no choice but to take them with the flash in the middle of the night while she was up playing. Nevertheless, I love that little girl to pieces.

  1. She's a doll! Good for you for spoiling her a bit! =)
And your toy is adorable - too bad Coca is not a big fan of toys, she only loves bouncy balls and frisbees and things she can run after.
