Gold & Watercolor Geometric Bunny Art

With springtime and our big move right around the corner, one of the top items on my to-do list was to create a piece that can perform double duty - Easter decor at our current house and woodland nursery decor at the Fixer Upper. I'm pretty sure this Gold & Watercolor Geometric Bunny fits the bill perfectly.

I'm a sucker for watercolor, and with the addition of gold leaf, this is easily one of my new favorite projects.

I'm not sure how it happened, but over the last two weeks, Jasper has gotten into a phenomenal routine and has been going to sleep by 8:00 p.m. every night. Praise the Lord! Now that I'm back to work, this has been a true blessing. I usually fill the following 2 hours with cleaning, laundry, and prepping for tomorrow at Grandma's. By some miracle, I've even had the opportunity to fit in some 'me' time in the form of crafting.

This piece was completely impulsive and worked out perfectly simply because I had all of the materials in my supply hoard and didn't have to drag a sleeping baby to the craft store: gold leaf (which has sat untouched *GASP* since I made those gilded glass vases), adhesive pen, watercolors, and canvas.

While the finished product looks fabulous, the process is uber simple:
1. Choose a color palette and apply the watercolor paint all willy nilly.
2. Continue adding a little water and a little pigment until you have the desired effect. Allow it to air dry (I was impatient - ain't nobody got time for that! - so I used a blow dryer to speed up the process)
3. Place your Peeps bunny template (or any animal of your choosing) onto the dry canvas and create a dotted outline. The dots should be spaced out wherever the shape changes direction - for example, I dotted at the highest tip of the bunny's ears, the widest points, and at the base of each side.

4. Using a ruler, connect the outline. This is where the geometrical silhouette takes form. Imagine 6 or 8 dots around a circle, once connected, your circle shape is now a hexagon/octagon. Draw intersecting and fragmented lines on the inside of the pattern. I used pencil for this so I could erase if it didn't look just right and that was really helpful for me. Don't think too much about this step though, just do what you feel looks right.
6. When your satisfied with the overall look, trace over the entire outline with a gold leaf adhesive pen. Don't worry about going too quickly as the adhesive should set for about 5 minutes before applying the gold leaf anyway.
7. Carefully apply gold leaf sheets over the entire image/adhesive. Let set for about 3 minutes.

8. Using a very soft paint brush, rub over the leaf in a circular motion. The leaf will gradually tear away where there is no adhesive and stay in place where there is. If you notice any areas there the adhesive dried too soon: apply a little more, let it get tacky for a couple minutes, then apply additional gold leaf. Repeat the removal process.

When you're finished, you'll end up with a unique piece of mixed media artwork!

I think this will look really stunning with the rest of our spring decorations but I'm really excited to add this to Jasper's gallery wall in his blue woodland nursery.
