I mentioned on Monday that over the weekend the Mr. and I babysat together. It was a blast since we were with three of our favorite children (our ring bearer, flower girl, and their baby brother). I thought it might be fun to bake a little treat with them since we used to cook together all of the time when I was their nanny. Best decision ever. Today's recipe is the fifteenth of The 25 Projects of Christmas - Snowman Button Cookies.
Maybe I just had the best helpers ever, but these cookies were perfect for little hands to make. You can make this with any prepackaged cookie mix or your favorite cookie dough. And they are just so darn cute, why wouldn't you want to make them?
Our sweet ring bearer stole the Mr. to play MarioKart and he was happy to oblige. I was left with two very willing helpers -- flower girl (FG) and baby brother (baby).
We used Betty Crocker Molasses cookie dough mix and got to work preparing it as instructed. First, FG took a stab at it and was quite the Suzy Homemaker!
Not to be outdone, Baby did his best and ended up just stealing some cookie dough. As you can see by the crumbly consistency, this is PRE-EGG. Never consume raw cookie dough.
Scoop out rounded tablespoonfuls onto an ungreased cookie sheet (as directed by the recipe instructions)
Set the cookies in the oven to bake, as directed. All you gotta do now is wait patiently. Or just wait, who's patient nowadays anyway?
Bring them out of the oven about one minute earlier than the recipe calls for -- you want them to be soft but not mushy.
While the cookies are still very hot, smush them down with the bottom of a cup. This will give them the tell-tale rim that so many buttons have.
This is what they'll look like when you've done it to each:
With a drinking straw, poke holes (2 or 4) into each cookie. This is a great time to utilize fine motor skills, counting abilities, etc.
Move the cookies to a wire rack to finish cooling.
Now you're done! Bring these little guys to your next cookie swap, school party, etc. They'd be darling sugar cookies in pretty pastel colors or perfectly spicy gingerbread shapes. I'd highly suggest not using any dough with chunks though (be it chocolate chips, raisins, or nuts) as they'll interfere with the holes and imprint.

So cute! I've always thought about buying a button-shaped cookie cutter (but I was too cheap for them - they wanted about 7$ for them - pfft!) because they look so sweet. Now I will make my own ones, following your idea! =) Thanks for sharing!
